EASY BARBECUE SAUCE
8 ounce can tomato sauce
2 tablespoons tomato paste
1/4 cup water
1/4 cup cider vinegar
1/4 cup granular Splenda or equivalent liquid Splenda
1/2 teaspoon blackstrap molasses
1/2 teaspoon yellow mustard
1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 1/2 teaspoons liquid smoke (see my comments below)
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon onion powder
Pinch allspice
Pinch cloves
Pinch cinnamon
Pinch celery seed

Bring all of the ingredients to a boil in a medium saucepan. Simmer over low heat for 1 hour, stirring occasionally. If you have the heat any higher, it will spit all over the stove and make a mess.

Makes about 1 cup

With granular Splenda:
Per 2 tablespoons: 17 Calories; trace Fat; trace Protein; 4g Carbohydrate; .5g Dietary Fiber; 3.5g Net Carbs
Per 1/4 cup: 35 Calories; trace Fat; 1g Protein; 8g Carbohydrate; 1g Dietary Fiber; 7g Net Carbs
Per Batch: 138 Calories; 1g Fat; 4g Protein; 31g Carbohydrate; 4g Dietary Fiber; 27g Net Carbs

With liquid Splenda:
Per 2 tablespoons: 14 Calories; trace Fat; trace Protein; 3g Carbohydrate; .5g Dietary Fiber; 2.5g Net Carbs
Per 1/4 cup: 29 Calories; trace Fat; 1g Protein; 6g Carbohydrate; 1g Dietary Fiber; 5g Net Carbs
Per Batch: 114 Calories; 1g Fat; 4g Protein; 25g Carbohydrate; 4g Dietary Fiber; 21g Net Carbs

Now that it looks like KC Masterpiece Classic Blend barbecue sauce is no longer available in stores, I decided to try and come up with a good replacement. Although this doesn't taste at all like the bottled kind, it's pretty good and has a nice tang to it. I do think that it could use a lot more smoke flavor though. I'll probably put in 2-3 teaspoons next time and also increase the sweetener a bit to compensate for the extra bitterness of the smoke. The ingredient list looks long but it's very easy to mix this up.
